Description

Welch Belt Drive vacuum pump model 1380C-01 giving you an ultimate vacuum of 0.001 Torr (1 micron) and a volumetric flow rate of 5.6 CFM. These belt driven rotary vane vacuum pumps are ruggedized and built to perform and last in demanding environments and applications.

The Belt Driven Rotary Vane Pump has a high oil capacity which also yields a high contamination tolerance. Furthermore, the lower operational RPM, which is about 3 times less than a direct drive rotary vane pump, will result in a longer service life due to lower operational temperature (about 10 degrees less) and less wear and tear.

The trade-off are that these types of pumps are heavier than its direct drive rotary vane counterparts, require more oil, and have more moving parts such as wheel and pulley.

Helium Leak Testing Systems
Helium Leak Testing Systems are instruments which detect leaks in specimen by detecting present of helium. Helium is used as a tracer gas to detect and quantify a leak. For example, a test specimen is filled with helium and placed into a test chamber, a vacuum is pulled and a helium mass spectrometer is connected to the test chamber. If helium is detected, it is due to the fact that it has escaped from the specimen through a leak path. Helium Leak Testing is a qualitative and quantitative method of detecting product leaks.
Belt Drive Rotary Vane Vacuum Pumps
A Belt Drive Rotary Vane Pump is almost identical to a Direct Drive Rotary Vane Pump. The only difference between the two is that the belt drive Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump is driven by a belt. There are several advantages why a belt drive vacuum pump would be preferable. One of these reasons is that the belt drive Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump runs at a slower RPM therefore the temperature created is lower, the wear and tear is less, and the overall lifetime of the pump is longer. The disadvantages are a lower CFM and performance.
Our Work: High Altitude Vacuum Testing of Electrical Connectors and Components
This was an interesting project where one of our customers needed to test wires up to 44 inches long within a high altitude simulation environment. In addition to testing wires, several other electric connectors required altitude testing as well. The altitude requirements were 100,000 feet (30.510 km) which corresponds to 8.36 Torr - a piece of cake when it comes to the vacuum requirements of our chambers.

In the article we are going to cover rotary vane vacuum pumps. We will touch upon how they work, what they are used for, when to utilize a rotary vane vacuum pump, its advantages and disadvantages. Perhaps you have noticed that rotary vane vacuum pumps come in all shapes and sizes. On one website, the vacuum pump is less than a $100; on another website you see a vacuum pump quotes at $10,000. I would imagine that you immediately ask yourself what the deal here is.
